Last October, the prestigious communicator and expert in International Affairs, Carolina Amoroso, came to Northlands to share her experience aboard the Geo Barents, the search and rescue ship operated by MEDICOS SIN FRONTERAS in the Mediterranean Sea. Every day, thousands of people escape extreme violence and armed conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa or the Middle East in the Mediterranean, as well as in the Darien jungle. Both regions are afflicted by one of the worst scourges of the 21st century: the quest for a better life for thousands of refugees, and only a few media can access documenting the drama that unfolds there.
Her first-hand account of this experience proved to be a very enriching activity for the 8th and 9th-grade students, who had already studied the topic of refugees but had the opportunity to get closer to a very vivid and emotional account of rescue operations, not only from a journalistic perspective but also a moving one.

El pasado mes de octubre, la prestigiosa comunicadora y experta en temas internacionales Carolina Amoroso se acercó a la escuela para compartir su experiencia a bordo del Geo Barents, el barco de búsqueda y rescate que maneja Médicos Sin Fronteras (MSF) en el mar Mediterráneo, donde diariamente miles de personas escapan de la violencia extrema y de los conflictos armados del África Subsahariana o de Medio Oriente y en la selva del Darién. Ambas regiones son azotadas por uno de los peores flagelos del siglo XXI; la búsqueda de una vida mejor para miles de refugiados y solo algunos medios pueden acceder a registrar el drama que allí se vive.
Su relato en primera persona de esta experiencia resultó una actividad muy enriquecedora para los chicos de Y 8 y Y9, quienes ya habían trabajado el tema refugiados, pero tuvieron la oportunidad de acercarse a un relato muy vívido y emocionante de las tareas de rescate, no solo desde una perspectiva periodística, sino también conmovedora.
